Who was Marie Laveaux?
"Marie Laveau was a voodooienne. She was the queen of them all. White and colored folks used to go to her. She could keep anybody from harming you and she could do anything you wanted done to anybody. How she used to do it, I don't know. She used to say prayers and mix different things to give people to drink, to rub with, to throw over your shoulder, to throw in the river. Oh! She had a million things to do but everything would happen just like she would say. She used to get a lot of money and gifts from rich white folks. Marie Laveau is a name that was respected by everybody and dreaded by a lot of people. When she died she had a big funeral with white and black paying their respect. For years after she died people used to go put money (silver) on her grave in the St. Louis Cemetery. Up until now some people goes there and put their hand on her grave and makes a wish and their wish is granted. I don't recollect exactly where it is because I'm getting along in years now and the name is worn off the tombstone but it's in the St. Louis Cemetery." Aileen Eugene, 1919 N. Priour St., April 27, 1930

Best known as the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, Marie Laveaux was a well known humanitarian, femme traiteur (healer), and beautician. As a beautician, she learned about the medicines, oils, cosmetics, and herbal products reportedly from her mother. As femme traiteur she gained much experience tending to the sick in a place and time when smallpox, yellow fever, malaria, and other infectious diseases were widespread.

People from all walks of life went to Marie Laveaux for all kinds of things. There was never a situation she couldn’t handle, though she did not take all cases. Like most rootworkers, she had her own criteria for the jobs she took on, and one of those criteria was payment. While she did do pro bono work, she is actually known for all of the time and attention she gave to the incarcerated and the sick. Everyone else, however, had to pay her. She was a consummate business woman and in fact, is credited for single-handedly making a business out of Hoodoo.

Marie Laveaux was a remarkable woman for her time even by today’s standards. Her shrewd business sense had her serving the bourgeoisie, comforting the sick, and counseling the rich and the poor. Her charms were known for their efficacy and are said to have sold for thousands of dollars.

There are many legends and assumptions made about Marie Laveaux that stem from the folklorists and newspaper reports of her day; mostly sensationalized accounts of her orgiastic Voodoo parties on Bayou St. John or Lake Ponchartrain. Most of these accounts tend to dismiss any real spiritual powers she possessed, and instead attribute her skills to that of conning as opposed to cunning.

Marie Laveaux’s Shock and Awe Tactics
Marie Laveaux was well-known for her “Hoodoo Shock and Awe” tactics whereby she used human psychology to amplify the effects of her spells. She would routinely place her gris gris and tricks in plain sight of her targets and would even post notes warning people to cease a desist with certain behaviors or else suffer the consequences. She used this tactic on the court systems often with great success, it is said. What is not clear is whether or not she wrote the notes herself -  the question of her literacy is up for debate (despite the common assumption she was illiterate).

The Boss Woman's Business Manipulations
Marie Laveaux (often referred to as “Boss Woman”) was a consummate business woman and is responsible (along with Dr. John) for the commercialization of Voodoo and Hoodoo in New Orleans. One of the ways she maintained a consistent flow of customers was through Hoodoo psychological warfare tactics. Her tactics accomplished three things:

1. Fulfilled the desires of the one who hired her to do the work.
2. Created panic and negative emotion in the target and set into motion the “self-fulfilling prophecy.”
3. Created more business for herself as the targets would more often than not come to her to take off the fix.

Of the eight traditions of Marie Laveaux, three were routinely employed in her Hoodoo Shock and Awe tactics:

1. Gris Gris
2. Bottle Spells
3. Doll Baby Conjure

In the Marie laveaux Conjure Course, I will teach you about all eight traditions she is known to have practiced, as well as a variety of different conjures such as the Gris Gris Bag for Improving Finances below.

Serving the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans
Marie Laveaux has many followers but few know how to serve her correctly. This stems in part from the fact that she is not recognized for the rising loa that she is. In New Orleans she is not merely a spirit guide as some purport her to be. Her influence and contribution to New Orleans Voodoo and hoodoo is extremely significant. She smiles favorably upon those who know how to serve her correctly. Others who try and fall short do not have her favor and it is not unheard of for her to wreak a bit of havoc upon their lives as a result. She is a strong female Spirit who knows her worth and commands respect in spirit, as well as in life.

Before a person decides to serve Marie Laveaux, it is important to realize that in New Orleans she is considered the Mother of New Orleans Voodoo. She is the most important spirit of the New Orleans Voodoo pantheon and unless she is recognized as such, you would be better off not serving her at all. I have seen her cause more than a few problems for people who do not honor her correctly or who do not consider her anything more than a spirit. Be warned, if you do not believe she is a loa and that she is the Queen Mother of New Orleans Voodoo, do not attempt to serve her. Simply read the information and think about it. There is always time to serve her should you come to the realization that she is much more then the ghost of a Voodoo con woman perpetuated by the uninformed.

Marie Laveaux's traditional altar is a three-tiered altar. She can be set up as a single surface as well; but, traditionally, her altar is three-tiered. Yes, this takes up a lot of space and is harder to maintain, but she is the Queen, after all. In the Marie Laveaux Conjure Course, you will learn the correct way for setting up both of these types of altars.
